Description
Performance Notes: Spring Peepers
This piece was inspired by the tiny tree frog known as a “Spring Peeper.” At dusk, their voices begin tentatively with a few scattered calls. As night deepens, their chorus swells into a continuous, shimmering backdrop that fills the forest.
The tempo of this piece is marked moderato, but it should breathe with natural ebb and flow. The marking a piacere (“at the performer’s pleasure”) invites freedom—listen to the recording for where the music presses forward and where it gently pulls back.
At section B2, the tempo steadies into a more driving character, echoing the full chorus of the frogs. Finally, as dawn approaches and the peepers quiet, both tempo and dynamics ease, bringing the piece to rest.

From Mark, “Like many of us, I want to support our friend Dan Landrum as he undergoes cancer treatment. Dan has made it clear he doesn’t want charity—but what he does have is an incredible collection of music that can speak for itself. With his blessing, I’ve transcribed one of my favorite hammered dulcimer pieces of his, Spring Peepers, into a downloadable PDF arrangement available right here. All of the proceeds from its sale will go directly to Dan.
If you know an intermediate or advanced dulcimer player who would enjoy learning this fun, lively tune, please spread the word. Together, we can support Dan through the music he’s given us.”
