This volume features eighteen pieces drawn from a variety of centuries, sources, and genres, including ballads, dances, and laments.

While remaining faithful to the historical context of each melody (drawing on primary sources and scholarly research) Val also allows his own artistic voice to shape the harmonizations and arrangements. As he explains, “I wanted to present the music of these great composers as fresh and vivid as in my imagination.” Though these arrangements can be performed on a variety of instruments, they are crafted to highlight the unique resonance and expressive qualities of the hammered dulcimer. Each piece includes performance notes to help players achieve maximum musicality and expression.

Enhancing the musical experience, the book also features original paintings and hand-drawn illustrations by Belgian artist Oriane Deckers, whose work reflects a shared passion for music, fantasy, and historical folklore. The entire volume is printed on premium linen paper, bringing both the music and artwork vividly to life.
