Volume 2 of this comprehensive guide delves deeper into the essence of Irish music, answering the question, “How can I capture the true Irish sound on my instrument?” Building upon the foundation laid in Volume 1, this book explores the nuanced elements that define the Irish musical style, going beyond mere notes and rhythms.
The introduction meticulously outlines the distinct characteristics of authentic Irish music, delving into the intricacies of dance tune structures, traditional instruments, and essential modal scales. However, the heart of this volume lies in its exploration of the unique Irish ornaments that imbue the tunes with their unmistakable charm and authenticity.
Through detailed explanations and practical notation of ornaments, Volume 2 demystifies these idiosyncratic ornaments, allowing players to infuse their performances with the rich, nuanced accents of Irish music. A treasury of tunes commonly heard in Irish sessions but often overlooked by dulcimer players awaits, each meticulously annotated with ornamentations and presented in standard music notation.

Dr. Wade has provided a wonderful variety of tunes in this book, as well as great information on how to play Irish ornaments that is very accessible to those of us who do not have a background in Irish music. This is both a great companion volume to the first book, and an excellent standalone volume. The more I work with it, the more I want to learn about playing Irish music on my HD! If you don’t have the first book, you will certainly want it after seeing this one. Also, the PDF version has links from the table of contents to each of the tunes, which is a very nice feature if electronic books are your jam. I have found that the links in the table of contents work very well in Forscore. Whichever format you prefer for music books, don’t miss this one if you love Irish music, I am glad that I didn’t!
